The Christian Gospel was first brought to Wanganui by Maori evanglists between 1836 and 1838. The most prominent being Chief Wairemu Te Tauri. C.M.S Missonaries John and Martha Masin and Richard and Caroline Taylor were based at Putiki, over the river, from 1840. The first town services were held in the school house at Moutoa Gardens.
History Of Christ Church Christ Church Wanganui is a historic and diverse Parish incorporating four churches. The first Christ Church, built in 1844 stood on the site of the State Insurance Building in Victoria Avenue. A plaque in commemoration of the 150th Anniversary may be found on an archway nearby. The second Christ Church was built in 1866 adajacent to the first Church. It was moved to Gonville in 1921 and still stands as St. Peter's Church. The Original Parish extended to the Waitotara Valley and included Wanganui East and part of the present Marton Parish. Christ Church 243 Wicksteed Street. The third Church of that name, built in 1920, originally intended to be the hall for a magnificent new Church of Cathedral dimensions which was never built.
History Of St Chad's Great North Road Built in 1927 and enlarged in 1978, St Chad's stands in beatiful surrondings on St. John's Hill.
History Of St Laurence's (currently in recess) Gibson St. Aramoho. Celebrated its Centenary in 1995, it's spire seen by generations of travellers on the Wanganui River.
History Of St Oswald's SH3 Westmere A beautiful brick Church, popular for weddings. Built in 1915 and extended in 1929. St Oswald's serves an extensive rural area.
